What is OEE?
OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) is the share of the required production time that a machine actually spends making good parts at its ideal speed. It is the product of three rates: availability, performance and quality. The indicator comes from Seiichi Nakajima's total productive maintenance (TPM), is defined in ISO 22400-2:2014, and is standardised in France as TRS by NF E60-182.
For maintenance, OEE turns breakdowns into lost output that production understands. Availability falls with each failure and each long changeover; performance falls with minor stops and reduced speed, which often go unrecorded; quality falls with scrap and start-up rejects. In the example on this page, availability is 87.5%, performance 90.5% and quality 95%, for an OEE of 75.2%: the largest loss is the hour of stoppage.
Availability losses
Breakdowns, setups and adjustments. They are counted in time: the machine was required and did not run.
Performance losses
Idling, minor stops and reduced speed, measured against the ideal cycle time. This is why that time must be the rated one and not an observed average.
Quality losses
Defects, rework and start-up yield losses. A part reworked afterwards does not count as good in the OEE.
Required time, not calendar time
OEE is measured over the time production planned to run. A weekend or a shift with no orders lies outside that time and does not lower it.

OEE results filed with the work order
Here, the calculator is free and the result is gone when you close the page. In Reglova, it is attached to the work order on the right machine: you find it again at the next breakdown, and on audit day.

When to calculate OEE on a line
01
Follow a line shift by shift and see which of the three rates pulls OEE down.
02
Put a figure on an improvement: fewer minor stops raise performance, less scrap raises quality.
03
Speak the same language as production, which often displays its OEE already.
Good to know
The ideal cycle time is the machine's rated cycle time, not an observed average. A performance rate above 100% almost always means the ideal cycle time entered is too long.
OEE formula: availability × performance × quality
OEE compares the time spent making good parts with the required time. It breaks down into three rates: availability (is the machine running?), performance (is it running at its rated speed?) and quality (are the parts good?). The calculation follows the French standard NF E60-182, where OEE is called TRS.
